THE RISER FOUNDATION
THE RISER FOUNDATION
The Riser Foundation was born from the passion of a small group in the Nashville community to support charitable organizations with a focus on the needs of children and families. What started in 2006 as an annual event to benefit the Monroe Carroll Jr Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt grew into a multiple city initiative for children’s hospitals across the country. Now after having raised and given more than $7 million, the Riser Foundation has evolved into a fund that supports more than just adolescent health needs to also homelessness, literacy, education and hunger. We believe that there are everyday Risers all around, and it’s our obligation to recognize, stand by and support them.

In 2013, University School of Nashville was invited by Horizons National to establish the first Horizons Program in Tennessee on our campus. Horizons National is a transformative, educational summer enrichment program serving low-income public school students with a broad range of academic abilities. Horizons was founded in 1964 in New Canaan, CT, and programs now exist in 17 states across the country. Horizons goal is to address the achievement gap and prevent summer slide by helping students stay at their grade levels rather than lose academic skills over the summer. On average, Horizons students improve 8 to12 weeks in reading and math skills over the six-week summer period. Those gains, when added to the “summer slide” our students thus avoid, leave our students 5-6 months ahead of where they would have been without Horizons.
For 31 years, Safe Haven Family Shelter (SHFS) has served as the only shelter-to-housing program of its kind in Middle Tennessee that accepts the entire homeless family. While keeping the family together, SHFS provides comprehensive education, counseling and support for families to achieve lasting self-sufficiency. Safe Haven’s approach is one of service, compassion, trauma-informed care and evidence-based practices. More information can be found at www.safehaven.org.
